Types of spine surgery

Spine Surgery is often not a cause of worry. It is very vital to undergo the procedure if needed for the benefit of our body. With spine specialists in chennai, Here are some of the surgeries that are recommended by us:

  • Vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty: These procedures are conducted  to repair compression fractures in the vertebrae caused by osteoporosis. In both procedures, a glue-like bone cement is injected to harden and strengthen the bone.

  • Spinal decompression: This is done when spinal stenosis causes a narrowing of the spinal canal that causes pain, numbness, or weakness. The surgeon removes the bony walls of the vertebrae and any bony cavities in order to widen the spine to relieve pressure on the nerves.

  • Discectomy surgery: This procedure is done to remove a disc when it herniates and presses the nerve root or spinal cord. Laminectomy and discectomy are often performed together.

  • Amniotomy: In Amniotomy, the surgeon widens the bony opening where the nerve root exits the spinal canal to prevent bulging discs or ageing joints from pressing on the nerve.

  • Nucleoplasty: It is also known as plasma disk decompression. This laser surgery uses radio frequency energy to treat people with low back pain associated with mild herniated discs. The surgeon inserts a needle into the disc. A plasma laser device is then inserted into the needle and the tip of the needle is heated, creating a field that vaporises the disc tissue, reducing its size and reducing pressure on the nerves.

  • Spinal fusion: The surgeon removes the disc from two or more vertebrae and then fuses the adjacent vertebrae with a metal device attached to the bone graft or screw. Spinal fusion can cause loss of spinal flexibility and requires a long recovery period for bone graft to grow and fuse.

  • Artificial disc Replacement: considered an alternative for spinal fusion in the treatment of seriously damaged discs. This procedure involves removing the disc and replacing it with a synthetic one that restores height and movement between the vertebrae.

Some surgical treatments are usually not recommended for people, due to its side effects. Hence it is highly recommended to consider a proper orthopaedic before finalising the date for surgery.

Rehabilitation after spine surgery _ explanation from Dr. Parthasarathy Srinivasan

How long will the recovery period be?

Your recovery will depend on many factors, from your general health to the degree of symptoms you had before surgery and the type of procedure you went through. Certain surgeries are minor and the doctor might recommend you to be on rest for a day or three but certain surgeries can take upto six months to a year for the spine to heal. It is always best to follow the doctor's prescription and instructions to heal much faster.

Conclusion :  Back pain is not always related to the spine, and everytime the pain on the spine will not lead to a serious issue. When in need of Spine Surgery in Chennai it is never a high time to consult us to check yourself and retain your spine health!
